Renaming a photo was the primary impetus in developing Foto Filer. When a photo is downloaded from the camera to the PC, the name assigned to the photo by the camera (manufacturer) is the same name assigned the photo when stored on the PC. Unless somewhere along the line it is changed, the name of the photo will have no bearing on what the photo represents. Foto Filer provides the means to make this name change with little effort. For instance, if a photo was stored on the PC with the name dac0023.jpg it can be renamed to a more meaningful one by simply typing a name into Foto Filer that makes sense to you. For example, typing the name "Parliament" for the picture shown below would result in a photo name stored on the PC called Parliament.jpg. There is no need to enter the format type of the photo (.JPG), or any of the folder information. Foto Filer handles all this for you. {back to top}
Foto Filer can also be used to automatically generate sequentially assigned photo names for either an entire group of pictures or a selected number of the pictures in a group. For instance, if a group of photos were stored on the PC with the names dac022.jpg through dac026.jpg you can assign a sequence number to each of them by simply selecting a special command button. Furthermore, by typing in a common prefix name such as "VACATION", each sequentially assigned name will be preceded with that prefix. As a result, the non-descript photo names would now be called VACATION 001 through VACATION 005. {back to top}
In addition to its primary function of renaming photos, Foto Filer also provides the ability to create an unlimited number of non-proprietary albums in which the photos can be quickly stored and cataloged. Photos can be moved into, or out of one album and into another any number of times. The photo can be copied and renamed and then moved into an appropriate album. Foto Filer also offers a number of tools that provide photo enhancement such as cropping, image rotation, red-eye reduction, and more. Changes made to a photo can be erased, saved, or saved under a different photo name so that the original photo will remain un-altered. Foto Filer also offers special viewing features so that the collection of photos can be shared with others or to accommodate the renaming functionality of Foto Filer. For instance, the Film Strip displays up to twenty-four images on a single screen. From the display, images can be selected or deselected to accommodate other Foto Filer processing. The automatic assignment of photo names, for example, can be limited to only those photos that have been selected. {back to top}
The Slide Show feature is very much like a slide projector, limited only by the size of the screen used for displaying the photos. It even has an on-screen remote control to set the speed of the show (how long each slide stays projected on the screen) as well as the ability to pause and so on.
